From Labour to Green - my explanation
Dear Ouseburn Resident,
I'm writing to let you know that I have left Labour and joined the Green Party, and I will now sit as a Green councillor for Ouseburn.
My decision is about where I can do the most good. Many residents have told me they feel let down by Labour, especially after the attacks on disability benefits and the cut to the winter fuel allowance. When people tell me they feel betrayed, I can't stand in front of them and say they're wrong. The government was elected on a promise of hope, but that promise hasn't been kept.
What I've found in the Green Party is a sense of honesty and hope that has been missing from national politics for a long time. The Greens' starting point is fairness. They talk openly about the housing emergency, the cost of living crisis, the strain on young and older people alike, and the need to clean up our rivers and tackle the wider climate crisis. And instead of blaming migrants, disabled people and other scapegoats, they focus on fixing what's actually broken.
The Greens are trying to build a kinder, more equal country. That's the kind of politics I want to be part of, and I think it's the kind of politics Ouseburn deserves.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years. I will continue to hold regular surgeries and deal with casework as before.
I'm hoping to stand for re-election as a Green Party councillor in May if chosen as a candidate by Green Party members.
Best wishes,
Alistair Chisholm
