Guide dog in News

Nice post from the Newcastle City Council Social Media featuring me and Umber follwing recent BBC coverage

“Meet the Sheriff and his incredible guide dog, Umber

After battling a serious illness that left him registered blind the new Sheriff of Newcastle, Cllr Alistair Chisholm, is continuing to serve our city with determination, passion and a real commitment to inclusion with support from a furry friend

In 2021, Cllr Chisholm became seriously ill with infective endocarditis, leading to multiple strokes and a long hospital stay. His recovery was challenging, and he gradually came to terms with a new reality of living with severe visual impairment.

Being registered blind doesn’t mean total darkness. For Cllr Chisholm, it means a changing and unpredictable view of the world. Blurred areas, missing patches and difficulty judging and navigating busy spaces Despite this, he has continued his vital work serving the people of Newcastle, adapting with technology, support, and determination

A huge part of that independence comes from Umber

“Umber has been absolutely transformational,” Cllr Chisholm say “I feel much more connected with the world and it’s easier to get out and about.”

Umber is more than just practical support, he brings the confidence, safety and companionship the Sheriff needs to get around the city, meet residents and carry out his duties with pride

Cllr Chisholm is also passionate about making Newcastle more accessible for everyone, and ensuring disabled voices help shape the future of our city

If you spot the Sheriff and Umber around the city, feel free to say hello and help us show what a friendly and welcoming place Newcastle is”
