July Citizenship Ceremony

Last Wednesday I stood in for the Lord Mayor for the first time to presided over the new citizens at the citizenship ceremony. Joined by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Nitin Shukla, and Council Officials, including Donna Houlahan, Registration Services Officer.

I’d been told it was a lovely event, and it really was! I distributed certificates to people from all over the world, many of whom had waited a long time to get their citizenship. They swore an oath, were given a small gift, listened to our short speeches, had their photos taken and attended a small reception where some of us chatted a bit more.

I’m looking forward to doing more of these. Below is the script for my short speech which is written almost exactly as I delivered it with a few of my ad libs missed out. The music was performed by the Lord Mayors Harpist, Janet Bennett and we were piped into the ceremony by the Lord Mayor’s Pipper, David Bailey.

“Hello everyone. We are here today to celebrate your citizenship with a ceremony that marks the occasion in a dignified and proper manner. As Sheriff and Deputy Lord Mayor I am delighted to share this special occasion with you, where you have chosen to become British Citizens. There is something special about seeking to become a new citizen. I am sure everyone here knows that this can be a long and difficult process, and I acknowledge the resilience and determination required. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and Newcastle belongs to everyone who makes their home here. We are a proud city with a strong identity. Over the centuries, our distinct culture has been enriched by people from all over the world. We have much to be proud of in our commitment to solidarity and inclusion. As citizens you now have an opportunity to help us continue welcoming people who come here for so many different reasons. Perhaps not the weather, but certainly, the community, education, joining family, work and of course sanctuary. As Sheriff and Deputy Lord Mayor, I celebrate the contribution that people of every background make to Newcastle. We rely on us all working together to make our city the best it can be. On behalf of the City Council, I would like to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to you all and look forward to you playing an active part in the life of the city. Congratulations to you all and enjoy your citizenship!”
